Abstract
The article analyzes the history of the concept of ‘grotesque’, the main stages of understanding and theorizing the ‘grotesque’ and ‘grotesque-comic’ in accordance with the dominant concepts of mimesis and mimetic. Grotesque actualizes the problem of the relationship between reality and fantasy in art; as well as the relationship between classical verifiable knowledge and unofficial science. Grotesque puts the Aristotle’s theory of mimesis to the test, telling not about what was (as historiography does) and not about what could have been (as epic, tragedy, comedy do), but about what could not have been: the combination of the incompatible, the combination of the incongruous, impossible, incredible, unthinkable hybrids. Grotesque emphasizes the problem of the body and corporeality; the effect of the fantastic in the representation of the real and the significance of topographical realities in the fantastic narrative.
