- Abstract
- The article studies the speech genre "prayer" with reference to the narrative and direct-speech fragments of The Tale of Bygone Years, or Primary Chronicle (Povest' Vremennykh Let). We have observed that the Chronicle presents all types of prayers (laudatory, petitionary, penitential, thanksgiving, soliciting), differing in a number of features (content, subject of speech, addressee, form of utterance). It is noteworthy that laudatory prayers are found only in narrative fragments, while pleading prayers are most often transmitted through direct speech, while their characteristics depend primarily on whether the person is secular or spiritual.
