Abstract
The article considers the use of simple complex speech turns in the direct speech of the Characters of The Tale of Bygone Years, which consist of at least two elementary speech moves. By analyzing their use, the author defines two types of relations between them; namely, illocutive equality or inequality, and certain typical characteristics of each of them - obligatory or non-obligatory connection, the use of direct and indirect speech acts and mono-functional and poly-functional utterances. The article specifies some patterns in the compatibility of elementary speech moves, forming simple complex speech turns of different type on the basis of the correlation of their semantic, communicative and formal structure.
