- Abstract
- By pointing at something one can indicate not only the position of the designated objects in space, but also the localization of events in time. The paper investigates this representational problem basing on the data of the Multimodal Russian Corpus (MURCO), constituent of the Russian National Corpus. The author has analyzed the main factors, which determine the choice of spatial directions, common for Russian temporal gesticulation, and has come to conclusion that in the Russian system of spatial reference the sagittal axis (forward vs. backward) is intended for the temporal meaning proper, while the transverse axis (right vs. left) is used preferably as the evidential axis (opinion vs. fact).
