- Abstract
- The author presents arguments in favor of incorporating the inner form of idiom into the model of its meaning. The inner form is twofold: it is an image and, simultaneously, a way in which its actual meaning is conveyed or motivated. Play on words, characteristic of idioms, their autonym usage, use of various restrictions in the process of their introduction into discourse, amalgamation of their actual meaning and inner form - these and some other factors discussed in the paper are evidence for considering the inner form a part of the structure of the meaning as well as of the definition of idiom.
