Abstract
The article is based on the analysis of Leonid Andreev's unpublished diaries, written while still at school. It examines the influence of Arthur Schopenhauer on the future writer's intellectual orientation and aesthetic predilections. It also traces the subsequent development of Andreev's attitude towards Schopenhauer and establishes the mechanism by which both general conceptual categories and individual philosophical concepts were transformed into motifs, characters and images in major works by Andreev, such as "The Life of Vasily Fiveisky", "Savva", "The Life of Man", "King Hunger", "The Seven Who Were Hanged". An analysis of connections between different philosophical and artistic world models makes it possible to talk of the influence Schopenhauer's writings had on Andreev's artistic make-up at several levels (not only the intellectual, but the existential and sensual ones as well).
