Abstract
Herzen and Turgenev kept debating the future fate of Russia for 20 years (from 1849 to 1869). Turgenev saw Russia as belonging to the European commonwealth and sharing her fate with the “sister nations”, for whom the future held in store varioussocial hardships, “revolutionary storms” and sudden good and bad turns. Herzen’s view was that Russia had her “own special way” and was able to completely avoid the “proletariat problem”, while founding her future upon the just laws of the Russian peasant community. This debate is reflected in Herzen’s journal publications, in Turgenev’s novels, and in Herzen–Turgenev correspondence.
