- Abstract
- The article dwells on problems of composing the academic history of Russian literature of the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The author surveys different appoaches to the subject vacillating between two principal tendencies in the analysis of literary evolution, the one based on its interrelationship with other social, ideological and cultural systems, the other reasoning from its immanent moving forces. Aiming at elaborating a comprehensive academic course of literature the author proposes to focus attention on working up “small literary histories” (those of different genres, styles, interaction with the society, etc.) to demonstrate their dynamic polyphony in Russian literature of the period as an integral, though problematical unity.
