Abstract
The article attempts to detect important for the creative history of the novel "Crime and Punishment" points of contact between Dostoevsky's ideological and imaginative artistic decisions and Katkov's (editor of "Russkii Vestnik" and "MoskovskieVedomosti") critical-polemical speeches and views. The article looks into three episodes associated with the "Physiology of Everyday Life" by J.H. Lewis, the First Schleswig War (Schleswig-Holsteinischer Krieg), and the image of Sonya Marmeladova in "the Gospel chapter" of the novel. The last episode is examined against the background of the "women's issues" discussion in the Russian literature, and Katkov's take on it.
