- Abstract
- This is an analysis of the essay published in 1860 in the literary magazine Svetoch under the signature of ‘M. Dostoevsky', even though it is usually regarded to be inspired – or to be written – by F.M. Dostoevsky in co-authorship with M. Dostoevsky. The article offers some arguments in support of the idea that F.M. Dostoevsky wrote this essay all by himself. It is shown that Dostoevsky's reception of Ostrovsky's plays and his take on Ostrovsky's ‘attempt to probe into' Russian character impacted his own works composed in the 1860s (e.g. Notes from the Dead House, The Gambler ). In view of all the said here, it is difficult to underestimate the significance of Ostrovsky's works for the Russian literature at large.
