Abstract
Blok's writings during 1909, from his translation of Heine's poems on Christmas, his own poem "On an Infant's Death" and the essay "Gogol's Child" through "The Italian Poems" to eventually the idea of the poem "Retribution" manifest recurrent images of the infant-redeemer born to a childless man (Blok's mystical self-representation here is St. Joseph) or conceived in an alian womb. The Biographical framework of this motif was set by the death of the child of Blok's wife and the death of Blok's estranged father; its historical background was Gogol's centenary.
