Abstract
The article proposes a reconstruction of basic plot elements of Lermontov's ‘Shtoss' and of its conceptual framework – all of which have to be fleshed out in the well-known text. In our reconstruction we proceed from the fact that Goethe's ‘Der Erlkönig' (mentioned by Lermontov in the opening) presumably provides the important model for ‘Shtoss'. We show that the standard text of ‘Shtoss' might be classified as a quasi-unfinished tale, a quasi-fragment. Hence, the sudden termination of a continuous narrative in the story might be interpreted as a clash between the transient and the immortal – a clash, which works itself out in the text and renders both human and artistic strive for completeness tragically inadequate.
