Abstract
The paper deals with two Russian verb classes and their literary English translations. The first class consists of the verbs denoting visual perception by an unnamed observer (The tents show up white; The silhouette of a woman appeared for a moment in the window). The second class consists of the verbs denoting location of spatial objects such as road, path, forest etc. (The path ended; The road entered the forest). Verbs of the first class incorporate the observer into their lexical meaning, while those of the second class – into the grammatical meaning of the Perfective form. The paper shows that literary translations of verbs of both classes frequently make the observer conspicuous.
