Abstract
The article considers the destiny of Eugene Sue's novel “Les Mysteres de Paris” in Russian literature of the 1840's. An ambivalent assessment of the book by its contemporaries (critics, writers and common readers) runs parallel to their lack of interest in Sue's genre innovations. The first literary works written under the influence of “Les Mysteres de Paris” were prone to parody Sue's methods rather than develop them.
