Abstract
The article presents a comparative analysis of Chekhov’s story “The Grasshopper” (1892) and G. Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovary (1856), which was available to Chekhov in the original and in translations. The story is likely to be a “constructive cryptoparody” of the novel, written to rethink the famous novel of Flaubert. Chekhov saw Flaubert’s heroine of the title as an extremely egoistic person who had to reap what she had sown.
