- Abstract
- The article sets criteria for defining the notion of ‘trope’. The main takes on this notion – as pertaining to the Ancient, Medieval, and Modern scholarly traditions – are systematized. Specifically, the notion of ‘trope’ is weighed against ‘fi gure’ and ‘transference’. The position of the tropes within the system of expressive linguistic means is accounted for.
