- Abstract
- Two problems – collection of facts and general conclusions, construction of theories – are essential for any sciences studying the world. Some scholars are inclined to solve the first problem, while the others are disposed to take up the second one. In the history of science we see a constant change of priorities. Periods of intense theoretical thought, aspiration for a new understanding of the well-known information take turns with those of following established canons and accumulation of new facts. In this article the place and role of scholars of both types in the field of linguistics and oriental studies of the 19th and 20th centuries is considered.
