Abstract

The article considers the author’s versions of the poem “An Answer of the Vassals”, which was distributed in handwritten form as a response to the poem “Forced Marriage (A Knightly Ballad)” published in the newspaper “Severnaya Pchela” in 1846 by E.P. Rostopchina, containing hints at the relationship between Russia and Poland and causing a scandal in the court circles. We introduce into scholarly circulation previously unknown lists of this work, indicating that it belongs to P.A. Vyazemsky, whose name in this context did not appear before. The article analyzes the literary relations of Vyazemsky and E.P. Rostopchina, the vocabulary of the anonymous writing, its connections with the poetic lexicon of Vyazemsky. It is concluded that, despite the significant correlation of the vocabulary of “An Answer of the Vassals” with the poetic language of Vyazemsky, despite the writer’s ideological activity in the 1840s and his constant attention to the fate and creativity of Rostopchina, the question of the authorship of the anonymous work remains controversial.
