- Abstract
The article purports to uncover the ritual basis of linguistic analysis in the treatises of the Vedanga. The author considers the ancient Indian treatises on phonetics, semantics and grammar as texts generated and functioning in ritual discourse. In the context of the ancient Indian ritual culture, the division of the text into sounds and morphemes, the identification of the semantics of each morpheme, and the creation of a sacral text according to the rules of grammar by forming word forms from morphemes is analogous to the brahman performing a sacral ritual.
