Abstract
The article explores the sources of early Russian iambic poetry in the context of the modernization of verse that was underway in Northern Europe in the 17th-18th centuries. It advances a hypothesis on the link between German and Dutch iambic poetry and the influence of both on the early work of Mikhail Lomonosov. A typology of prosodic organization of iambs in different language is put forward. In particular, similarities in the rhythmic structure of early Russian, German and Dutch iambic tetrameters are considered, suggesting the dependence of Russian iambs on their putative German models. The stress profiles of iambic tetrameter in Lomonosov and Opitz are shown to be analogous. An explanation of this phenomenon is attempted based on an analysis of the language prosody.
