Abstract
The article consists of two parts. The first part outlines the cognitive approach to the analysis and description of the linguistic meanings. The second part illustrates this approach. The focus is on the study of polysemy of transitive and reflexive verbs. It is demonstrated that the structure of the meanings of these verbs is as follows: “the basic meaning (reflexive sense) - the set of meanings derived from it (metaphorical and metonymical) meanings: passive, reciprocal, auto-causative, et al.”. A similar structure is inherent to the lexical polysemy.
