Abstract
In this paper we recreate the situation around the appearance of the introductory article to the fi rst volume of the Anniversary (6th) edition of Complete works of F.M. Dostoevsky in 14 volumes (1904-1906). No author (D. Merezhkovsky, S. Smirnova (Sazonova) and S. Bulgakov) seemed to be able to meet intention of the publisher A. Dostoevsky to get a fi tting biographical sketch of the life and work of the great writer. Yet, the debate around the introductory article revealed that a serious scholarly biography of the writer was highly expected - the demand, made obvious by the critique of Volzhsky (A. Glinka) and A. Fomin.
