Abstract
We examine the genre of the very popular medieval collection of saints' lives, Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend. This work has traditionally been attributed to the so-called genre of “legendaria”. The prominent French medieval scholar Jacques Le Goff has recently called the Golden Legend a summa of sacral time. Disagreeing with Le Goff, we define the genre of the work as a summa of sanctity (hagiographical summa), to which we attribute its unprecedented success. We also make use of recent research in Byzantine hagiography to explain the reasons for the misunderstanding and underassessment of the Golden Legend in modern times.
