- Abstract
- The commonly accepted semantic explanation of the Russian concessive conjunction khotya (though) works well for such sentences as Khotya bylo pozdno, nikto ne lozhilsya (Though it was getting late, nobody went to bed). The paper introduces new material to the point. (Cf. Though sometimes Peter may want to hire a taxi, usually he takes a bus.) It is demonstrated that the semantic meaning of the conjunction khotya (though) is based on the effect of deceived expectation.
