Abstract
The paper deals with the cycle of legends, which exist both in Greek and in Church Slavonic. The legends under consideration sit in-between the written tradition and folklore. They cluster around certain event – the real or imaginary raid of Catholics on Mount Athos. The attack was intended to break the resistance of the monks unwilling to join the Union of Lyon (1274). The cultural and textual evidence makes it highly improbable that the core myth, which is developed in different ways in each legend, antedates the 15th century. The author suggests that Zograf monastery was not only the center wherefrom the legends spread all over the Orthodox world, but also the place where the myth itself was born.
