Abstract

The article is concerned with Gogols representation of man in Dead Souls and with its specifi c features, in particular. The author argues that any preconceived defi nition does not exhaust the essence of Gogols persona. Gogols understanding of the human being in Dead Souls is universal. So Gogols protagonist naturally turns into an anthropological symbol. Using principles of a reverse perspective Gogol reveals the image of God in the person portrayed and points to a possible transformation of the persona.
