- Abstract
- Russian translations of Hegel’s “Phänomenologie des Geistes” (“Phenomenology of Mind”) have helped establish the Russian philosophical terminology. To embody Hegelian ideas in Russian language, translators used hyphenated compounds. Focusing on which, I compare Gustav Shpet’s and Alexsandre Kojève’s translations from Hegel and specifically discuss how the semantic, conceptual, and poetical dimensions of Hegel’s terminology open up in both renderings. The increasing use of hyphenated compounds in contemporary Russian philosophical texts appears to be in keeping with tradition.
