Abstract
The author presents an analysis of the fi nal episodes in Gayto Gazdanovs novel An Еvening at Claire (<1930>) that tell the story of the autobiographical narrators fi ght in the Civil War. Their detailed comparison with Leo Tolstoys battle prose shows that these episodes are a sort of a metatext. Gazdanovs image of man in the war is - to a great extent - constructed by means of nonattributed allusions to and quotations from Tolstoys battle prose as a transformation of Tolstoyan images, while his depiction of peaceful soldiers life is obviously oriented to the text of Dostoevskys Notes from the Dead House.
