Abstract
The question under discussion here is whether Lermontov's “Stoss” has been completed. Our approach is based on the analysis of the inner structure of the text. Its key leitmotif almost mirrors the plot of “Der Erlkönig”: a strayed or lost creature yields to the power of alien forces. Note worthy ist he fading of the text and its consequent, and meaningful breaking-off. According to memoirs of E.P. Rastopchina, that very effect was clearly observed when Lermontov was reading aloud his “Stoss”. Thus, we can single out three different versions of “Stoss”: S 1 (a version read by Lermontov as a full-fledged the atrical text), S 2 (a well-known literary version), and S 3 (a hypothetical full version, which was never realized by the author). S 1 and S 2 are made complete (and at the same time “quasi-broken”), while S 3 was never finished. We suggest that in the hypothetical full version Lermontov would have canceled the signs of completeness noticeable in S 2, and S 3 would have acquired features of a quasi-broken text
