Abstract
Having noted numerous reminiscences, parallels and echoes that connect Russian novels with the novel of Greek and Roman antiquity the author suggests that this is due to the memory of the genre (M.M. Bakhtin) as well as to the artistic requirements of modern literature. To meet them, the latter turns to the legacy of ancient mythology which leads, inevitably, to a transformation of ancient functions of the novel.
