- Abstract
- The historical origins of cento and its relations to adjacent phenomena are examined; the set of rules for composing, cento as a compilation genre is offered; the conditions for its success fulness are analyzed; the relationship of cento to verse and prosaic speech forms is scrutinized. The following typologies of centos are worked out: the instrumental (considering the contrivances of cento composition), the functional (considering the goals of the genre's employment), the quantitative (considering the number of authors and texts used), and the intentional (considering the compiler's motives for choosing the source texts).
