- Abstract
- The article deals with the genesis and semantics of the term “carnaval” (carnival) in Bakhtin’s book on François Rabelais. The origin and meaning of the term is discussed in the light of the history of the text: its outline, drafts and rough versions from the late 1930s to early 1960s. The article points to some hypothetic source of the “carnival conception” and shows its meaning in the context of a totalitarian society’s atmosphere of the time.
