- Abstract
- Hymnographical texts are of particular significance for the history of Old Russian and Church Slavonic. The majority of the texts are translations from Greek originals. However, as early as the middle of the 19th century, services and stichera were identified for which no corresponding Greek text was known. This absence of Greek sources encouraged the prevailing opinion among Slavists that these texts were original Slavic compositions. The author has discovered Greek sources for a number of troparia, as well as metrical, lexical and thematic correspondences between the service to St. Cyril and some Greek texts. The discovery of the Greek sources for the given texts has substantially improved our ability to understand them and facilitated the elucidation of the hitherto “obscure passages”. Moreover, it is now possible, through poetic and metrical analysis, to reconstruct the original form of the earliest Slavic hymnographic works, as well as the form of their hypothetical Greek originals.
