Abstract
The essay shows Coleridge’s poem “Christabel” in its development (from the time of close collaboration of Coleridge and Wordsworth to its publication in 1816) and treats its published version as a diptych. Thematically and structurally, Coleridge’s poem echoes another notable diptych of the English literature – John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” (the 1674 edition). Having created “Christabel”, Coleridge rethought parts of the Miltonic agenda aligning it with the Romantic poetics. The essay is written in commemoration of the four-hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Milton.
